The RSM Social Season Guide to
Royal Ascot
-
Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of British racing elegance and one of the most important occasions in the global social calendar. Defined by tradition, flair, and strict dress codes across each enclosure, it remains the ultimate showcase for bespoke and ready to wear hats, fascinators and show-stopping millinery.
For many guests, especially first-time attendees, choosing what to wear to Royal Ascot is an integral part of the experience, with hats remaining central to every enclosure and level of formality.
-
In the Royal Enclosure, women are required to wear formal daywear with dresses or skirts that fall just above the knee or longer, and with straps at least one inch wide. Hats are mandatory and should be appropriately formal, with a solid base of at least four inches in diameter. Structured hats and sculptural millinery are most suitable, while fascinators are not permitted in this enclosure.
-
In the Queen Anne Enclosure, women are expected to dress in elegant, formal race-day attire. Dresses, skirts, or tailored jumpsuits are appropriate, provided they meet modesty guidelines (no strapless or off-the-shoulder styles). Hats, headpieces, or fascinators are all acceptable, with hats or structured headpieces often preferred for a more classic look, while fascinators offer a more contemporary option.
-
In the Village Enclosure, the dress code is similarly formal but slightly more fashion-forward in interpretation. Women typically wear stylish dresses or coordinated outfits that remain elegant and occasion-appropriate. Hats, headpieces, and fascinators are encouraged and widely worn, with a strong emphasis on creative but polished race-day style.
-
In the Windsor Enclosure, the dress code is the most relaxed. Women generally wear smart summer dresses or coordinated outfits. Hats and fascinators are optional here, though many guests still choose to wear them for a traditional race-day feel.
